Dr. Matthew Y.C. Lin Named UCSF Surgery Clerkship Director
Matthew Y.C. Lin, M.D. has been named the UCSF Surgery Clerkship Director, starting January 2, 2020. Dr. Lin is an Associate Professor of Surgery in the Division of General Surgery. In his clinical practice, he cares for patients with conditions of obesity, gallbladder, intestines, stomach, and complex hernias. Dr. Lin is also a member of the acute care surgical service at the Parnassus campus.
Dr. Lin received his medical degree at the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA, followed by a general surgery residency at Harbor โ UCLA Medical Center. He then completed a fellowship in minimally invasive and bariatric surgery at UCSF. Soon thereafter, he joined the Department of Surgery faculty. During his career, Dr. Lin has continuously focused on medical and surgical education. He has earned certificates from both the UCSF Teaching Scholars Program (TSP) and the Training in Clinical Research (TICR) Program. In 2017, Dr. Lin was appointed as the Associate Director of the UCSF School of Medicine Surgery Clerkship. Dr. Lin also serves as Surgery Clerkship Site Director at UCSF Parnassus, and as PISCES Surgery Liaison for third year medical students, overseeing the surgical curriculum and pairing students with surgery preceptors. In 2019, Dr. Lin was inducted into the prestigious Haile T. Debas Academy of Medical Educators.
In addition to medical and surgical education, Dr. Lin's research interests include advanced foregut endoscopy, rescue therapies for weight regain, complex hernia repairs, acute care surgery, bariatric surgery, and robotic surgery. Dr. Lin serves on the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery Emergent Technology Committee and the American Hernia Society Membership Committee, and is a member of the American College of Surgeons and Society of American Gastrointestinal and Endoscopic Surgeons. He has also published numerous peer-reviewed articles in his field.
